Detail of Horsehead

Block 10, South Frieze, Parthenon
(Acropolis Museum)
2006
Print: 8 × 10 inches

Horses are everywhere in the Parthenon sculptural program, with the greatest number filling the lengthy and remarkable continuous frieze around the exterior of the cella. A variety of templates seem to have been used, but always with unique variations. This horse detail shows the careful attention given by the carver to the structure of the horse’s head, and open mouth where a metal bit originally would have been added. The Parthenon frieze dates to 442-438 B.C.E.
